User Guide PayPal Store Manager v1

Getting Started

DMXReady PayPal Store Manager gives you the power to accept all PayPal Account Transfers, eChecks, credit card, and Instant Transfer payments directly from your own website. Through the PayPal system, PayPal Store Manager allows you to collect, track, and record all transactions for automatic bookkeeping. It is simply the quickest and easiest way to turn your website into a basic yet powerful Point-of-Purchase e-commerce tool.

PayPal Store Manager includes:

  • PayPal Buy Button
  • PayPal Instant Payment Notification (IPN) file with all PayPal admin settings
  • All message pages
  • Pre-configured database that automatically tracks sales, and provides full accounting and reporting
  • Customizable catalog pages to display your products and services
  • Comprehensive User Guide to install the application into any ASP-enabled website

There are three steps to setting up DMXReady PayPal Store Manager: becoming a PayPal Merchant, installing PayPal Manager, and configuring your catalog and PayPal preferences.

DMXReady Designer's Tip: Pre-Plan the Product Line

If you are starting your e-commerce store front from scratch, it is a good idea to spend a few minutes to plan the product line, including defining the categories, sub-categories, and how your products all fit in. DMXReady PayPal Store Manager comes installed with a sample catalog that you can play with to view the application's system and structure.

Signing Up with PayPal

In order to accept PayPal payments and credit card payments through PayPal, you must sign up as a Merchant first. The PayPal site is very informative, and can answer all questions surrounding Merchant Tools, IPNs, and agreements. DMXReady strongly recommends that you read the information at the PayPal website carefully so that you fully understand your privileges and responsibilities as a PayPal Merchant.

Sign up with PayPal Here or follow the link through your Control Panel once you have installed PayPal Store Manager into your website.

Setting Up Your PayPal Preferences

Once DMXReady PayPal Store Manager is installed into your website, you can control all aspects of it, including setting up your PayPal preferences, directly from the administration page.

  1. Open the Control Panel page through any standard browser: http://www.yourdomain.com/admin/PayPalStoreManager/index.asp
  2. Click on Configure PayPal Preferences
  3. On this page, you will note a Test Store with all form items already filled in. Simply adjust the form to reflect your own information as follows:
    1. Store Name: Enter the name of your store as you wish it to appear on your PayPal pages
    2. Currency: Set to your preference -- default is US dollars
    3. PayPal Email Address: DMXReady recommends that you create a separate email address for your PayPal transactions
    4. Location of IPN Page: Unless you have moved the location of this file (not recommended), change "dmxready.com" to your own address.
    5. Cancel Page, Success Page: Same as above
  4. The URL for the Location of Payment Page Logo, if you wish to have your logo on the pages, will be determined by PayPal. More information on the process can be found at the PayPal website Here
  5. You have the choice of selecting the PayPal Button Type, either Single Item or Shopping Cart with the radio buttons. Your decision will be based on a number of factors; to find out more about the Shopping Cart method go the the PayPal website Here (Ignore the "Implementation" section -- DMXReady PayPal Store Manager has already set that up for you! -- and scroll down directly to the "Shopping Experience" section.)
  6. You can test your system before going live by setting the PayPal Server to "Test Server". Once you are ready to go live, switch to "Live Server". Find out more at the PayPal website Here
  7. Once you have completed all of your PayPal Preferences, click on the Save PayPal Settings button. The screen will refresh, and your changes will be made. You can change these preferences anytime.

Customizing the IPN Page

DMXReady PayPal Store Manager provides everything you need to get your e-commerce website running using the PayPal system. However you can further modify the ipn_PayPal.asp file using Dreamweaver to incorporate some of PayPal's advanced IPN features. Some information is available at their website Here; you can also contact PayPal directly for more information. The format for DMXReady PayPal Store Manager is ASP/VBScript.

You can also read the full PayPal Integration Guide  (in PDF format).

Customizing Your PayPal Page Appearance

PayPal will also help you further extend the payment features (such as different methods of handling shipping charges, tax calculations, etc.) and change the "look and feel" of your PayPal Page (inc_paypalstoremanager.asp). Refer to the Merchant Tools section of the PayPal website.

Creating Your Catalog of Products/Services

Add New Category and Sub-Categories

  1. Open the Control Panel page through any standard browser: http://www.yourdomain.com/admin/PayPalStoreManager/index.asp
  2. Click on Manage Catalog Items. You will notice a table with the following headers: Category, Sub-Category, Item ID, Item Name, Item Price, Activated, Edit, Delete, Preview. Items from the Test Store are already added here for you to view and experiment with.
  3. Above the table you will see a yellow box titled "View Items" with the following links: Add Items, Edit Items, View Items. Click on Add Items.
  4. In the row called "Select Category", click on the Add/Edit link.
  5. In the text box next to the title "Add New Category", type in the Category name exactly as you would like it to display (capitalized, etc.)
  6. Click on the Next button.
  7. If you want to add sub-categories, type in the Sub-Category name and click the Create button. If you do not want to create a sub-category, simply click the Create button without entering anything in the text box.
  8. To add more sub-categories, select the category name in the pull-down menu and enter other.
  9. Click the Close Window link when finished adding categories and sub-categories. (Note: the database updates when the Close Window link is clicked. Until that point, data can be lost. DMXReady recommends you press the Close Window button often for larger projects to ensure that the items are saved in the database.)

Edit and Delete Categories and Sub-Categories

  5. To edit, click on the Edit link on the row of the Category you wish to edit. You can change the name, upload an image to place with the category, and add an optional category description. Repeat the same in "Section Two" to edit any sub-categories.
  6. To delete, click on the Delete link on the row of the Category you wish to delete. The category will be removed from the database. Do the same for any sub-categories you wish to delete. (Note: sub-categories will not be automatically deleted when a category is deleted.)
  7. Click the Close Window link when finished. (Note: the database updates when the Close Window link is clicked. Until that point, data can be lost. DMXReady recommends you press the Close Window button often for larger projects to ensure that the items are saved in the database.)

Add A New Item

  4. Select the correct Category/Sub-Category pair from the pull-down menu.
  5. Type the Item name as you wish to see it displayed (capitalized, etc.) in the text box provided.
  6. Click on the Next button.
  7. Enter the Price and Item Description in the text boxes provided. You may also change the Item Name here.
  8. If you do not want the item to go live immediately, uncheck the Activate checkbox -- you can reactivate it at any time.
  9. You may add additional information by using the WYSIWYG editor, or by checking the HTML box to cut and paste HTML code from an outside source.
  10. Click the Save button, located at the top right and bottom right of the form.
  11. If you wish, you may add a thumbnail and a large image of your product/service. You can either Upload Image to the Server or Link to External Image Source. DMXReady recommends using 150x150 pixel images for the thumbnail image, and 500x500 pixels for the large image. However if you choose a different size, DMXReady highly recommends keeping consistent image sizes to ensure layout integrity (which will keep your site neat and tidy!)
  12. To preview the item, click on the Live Preview link, located at the top left of the form.
  13. When you are finished adding the item, click on the Go Back link to get back to the Add Item page, or click on Home to go back to the control panel.
  14. Repeat steps 4-13 for each item.

DMXReady Designer's Tip: Import Your Current Product List Directly Into Access

If your current product list is saved in an Excel or Access file, you can import it directly into the database (though you must have MS Access to do this). The Product Information for PayPal Store Manager is kept in the "tblItems" table in Access 2000.
