How to Hire a Copywriter
If you are a professional website designer, developer, or builder, chances are the topic of who will write the content for the website has come up at some point. Even DIY designers still need content for their pages. Most designers safely say “I don’t know…” and leave their clients to deal with that issue.

But you can add value to your own services – and save your client the hassle – by finding your own copywriter. A simple search on the Internet will reveal hundreds of writers. Your best bet is to narrow down your focus by searching for exactly what you need. For example, search for “web content writer” or “SEO writer” instead of just “writer”.

Once you have looked at a few websites and you are ready to contact them for more information, ask yourself the following questions:
  • How much experience does the writer have?
  • Do his or her samples read well?
  • Has the writer worked in my client’s industry before?
  • Is the writer willing to provide referrals?
Most writers don’t post their rates on their websites – and even if they do, the hourly rate can be misleading. Your best bet is to get a quote on your project. Be as specific as possible here – after all, if you don’t know exactly what you want, the writer can’t tell you exactly how much it will cost.

Also consider the fact that you are not just paying for content, you are paying for reliability and professionalism. Is the writer easy to work with? Does the writer meet deadlines (ask referrals)? Does the writer promptly reply to emails and phone calls? If the answer is no to any of these, think carefully before getting involved with them!

When you have found a writer that meets your needs (and you surely will), you can forward the contact info onto your client as a recommendation. Or, better yet, take care of the whole process and charge your own fee, either a flat-rate to compensate you for your time or a percentage of the writer’s fee.

Either way, your clients will appreciate the help, and you’ll appreciate the extra income!
